This week in Lombok … we have pygmy seahorses!! The pygmy seahorse is both tiny and well camouflaged. Typically measuring less than 2 centimetres in height. It is very difficult to spot amongst the sea grasses, soft corals or sea fans that it inhabits. Last week our PADI Divemasters Rein and Andi spotted 8 of them in different pinkish sea fans. And that at only 3 divesites out of 26!
So we had in South Gili’s quite a reunion of the smallest seahorse species in the world. Madlen and Soenke were not diving for many years. They did a PADI refresher dive with us. After that, both of them could not stop diving. They were amazed and loved the pygmy seahorse so much, that they were visiting them three times!
The life at South Gili’s divesites are blooming and also many other little fellers showed up. We saw ornate ghostpipefish; halimeda ghostpipefish; white leaffish; green giantfrogfish; light brown hairy frogfish; pygmy cuttlefish; dragonet; black ribbon eel; different kind of flabellina nudibranch and many more! Besides turtles, we had even some big visitors in South Gili’s: whitetipreefsharks!
The diving in Belongas is beginning to catch up for the coming season. They spotted already a school of 14 Hammerheadshark at our most famous divesite “the magnet”. Also the other nine divesites doesn’t have to hide beside the glamour of the Hammerheads. Aurora and Lionel enjoyed the schooling of whitetipshark and the stunning beauty of the landscape. And even there our Divemaster Pii found some pygmy seahorse which were totally forgotten when they saw 6 mobula rays starting to circle above their head.
