Once again here in Belongas, South Lombok our conditions have been up and down with temperatures ranging from 19ºC-24ºC, visibility from 5-25 meters, waves from .5-4 meters and current from small to strong washing machines and still our season has not ended.
We have been seeing hammerheads, mobula rays, white tip reef sharks, barracuda, devil rays, trevally, tuna and more and more schools of squid mainly at the dive site “Gili Sarang”.
Squids are Cephalopods of the order teuthida which consists of over 304 species. Like cuttlefish they have eight arms arranged in pairs and two usually longer tentacles. Squid are strong swimmers and some species can fly for short distances out the water.
When we have been spotting them they have usually been at around 5 meters close the island, hanging in a school of around 15-20 squids.
We still have a boat going out every day with divers from around the globe coming to see what Belongas has to offer, and still we have surprises every week.
This week once again on our surface interval we had yet another surprise, this time from a Dugong.
Dugong span across waters of around 40 countries and territories throughout the Indo-West Pacific. They are dependant largely on seagrass which brings them to habitat around coastal areas that support seagrass meadows like a lot of our bays here in Belongas.
Yet another lovely encounter, short but very sweet.
