This week here on the Gili’s, North Lombok we have been seeing a rise in Giant Frogfish. The first spot we had was a few weeks ago at Hans Reef and then nothing, but then this week we had a spot of this black variation at Gili Meno slope followed by a Red variation at the Home Reef Gili Air! All of these being a fairly big size hiding with feather stars or sponges and on artificial reefs.
Last night we had a shore night dive just in front of our dive centre and Edi (the guide) found a green one but a baby. It must be the season now for the frogfish to appear!!!
It has been a bit of a rainy past few days especially in the afternoons but that has not affected the water visibility at all. It has still been lovely crystal clear water with the temperature averaging at 29 degrees.
There is a lot of macro here actually, we have our bigger stuff like Turtles, barracuda, trevally, emperor fish, morays and so on but when you take your time and look around, in and under rocks and corals you will find a vast amount of macro.
The macro that we have been spotting around here is squat lobsters, painted spiny lobsters, squat shrimps, anemone shrimps, peacock tail shrimps, crabs, nudibranch, flatworms, ornate and robust ghost pipe fish and so on. I could go on and on. Sea moths and razor fish are another that we have been seeing more of up here around the north Gilis. We have found out that the best island for macro is indeed Gili Air!!!
