Peacock Mantis Shrimp love to show off and this week was no exception! This little one was standing to attention for our guest photographer, Victor, to give him the best shot!
There are over 400 different species of Mantis Shrimp. Also known as the Harlequin Mantis Shrimp, Clown Mantis Shrimp and Painted Mantis Shrimp, these critters offer a splash of colour to our underwater environment here in Lembeh.
The Peacock Mantis Shrimp builds their home by burrowing into the sand, creating a U-shaped tunnel with two openings.They catch their dinner mainly by ambush but do occasionally go out and hunt for it. Their main diet is made up of snails, slugs, crabs and clams,which they smash with incredible force to get to the meat inside the shell of their prey. The Peacock Mantis Shrimp packs an extremely powerful punch of over 80 kilometers per hour with the force of a 22 calibre gun!
Also seen this week in Lembeh, were the Mimic Octopus, Lembeh Sea Dragon, Pygmy Seahorses, Hairy Frog Fish, Painted Frog Fish and Shaun the Sheep nudibranch.
