We find ourselves in the final week of our divemaster.
It has been an incredibly challenging and fun experience so far. We both passed the skill circuit, which is what we thought would be the hardest part. We have completed all of our physical tests; the equipment exchange was a lot of fun. We have become very comfortable with giving dive briefings and guiding guests on the beautiful walls of Bunaken.
We’ve assisted on lots of courses; the DSDs have been the most fun and the open waters have been truly eye opening! They were a lot of fun and very interesting to see how different people learn.
We have fallen in love with the beautiful scenery both above the water and below and have been lucky enough to see all of the turtles in the ocean; quite a few of the sharks, and several dozen nudibranchs (our favourites).
After a fight with a Hammerhead (ahem, swimming pool) Dom suffered a pretty gnarly head abrasion that brought all of the excitement of an emergency boat trip to the mainland and a visit to the hospital; where they were very helpful and looked after us.
No water for a few days on Doctors orders and we booked ourselves into a nice hotel in Manado to let the head dry out. Wow! I don’t think either of us realized how much we needed the sleep and rest after 3 weeks of non-stop.
Fully rested and not quite fully healed we have left Bunaken and all of the wonderful friends we made there, who will be sorely missed, and we have arrived at Lembeh for a different type of adventure. On our first dive yesterday (on the house reef) not a turtle in sight but Porcupine fish, Peacock mantis shrimp, Moray eel, Ribbon eel blue spotted ray some very unusual Lion fish and lots and lots of clown fish!
Today we passed our rescue assessment, and had to locate a missing diver and tow them to shore whilst administering (faux) rescue breaths.
We have almost finished our mapping project and have just two more things to do before we are signed off as divemaster: deep dive set up and search and recovery.
A big thanks to the crew in Bunaken for a great three weeks; it wasn’t long enough by far. Roll on the weird creatures of Lembeh (aka Rachel and Gregor :-)).
