This week we had the pleasure to show some beautiful Harlequin Shrimps to some of our Singaporean guests in the site called Seraya. A group of seventeen divers from Singapore joined TwoFish Amed this weekend for two days of diving in Tulamben.
The objective was clear: “spot stuff”! Problem is, if I can say this way, we have plenty of stuff around here. After passing the first emotions of being back in the water after a while for some of them, we seriously started to search for the gold nugget. And we found it!
On Seraya, even disturbed by some annoying current, we found two beautiful Harlequin Shrimps sheltered with a piece of sea star…. Yes, Harlequin Shrimps are as beautiful as they are crual. Sea stars have the ability to re-grow their arm if injured or cut. This fact has been completely understood and integrated into Harlequin Shrimps behavior.
They cut one arm at a time, feed themselves on it and go for a new cut when the meal is over. We could call them talented at keeping their prey alive so if you sea a sea star missing an arm, look around these beauties of Harlequin Shrimps might be around. I can tell you our group really enjoyed them!
We also had a rescue mission this week! A German couple sailing around Amed just dropped one of their gear due to the nasty wind. After they mark the area with their GPS, we actually set a team to perform a search and recovery and try to bring back the missing equipment. Unfortunately, depth combined with bad conditions and current didn’t let us a chance to retrieve the gear but it was an exciting experience for us to try to help them out.
