We saw dolphins in the bay during a surface interval this week! It was a bit after lunch time when a couple of fins just pierced the surface in front of our restaurant at TwoFish Amed.

If fishermen usually see them off shore, it’s quite rare that dolphins are cruising that close from the shore and so that we can have them in sight. It was a group of around ten to fifteen individuals that offered our guests this vibrant show. The event was even more savourous that the guests at the time where teenager pupils from a Singapore school.

Under supervision of their instructors from OrcaScuba and their teacher, these eleven kids joined us for four days of diving in Amed and Tulamben. What a nice surprise and delightment to have a genuine dolphin show during the surface interval ! You would have loved to see their faces when I told them “Hey guys look over there, there are dolphins !”

In the occurance what we observed was Long-beaked common Dolphins (Delphinus capensis). It’s a medium sized Dolphin measuring up to two meters and a half, weight up to two hundred thirty kilograms when adult and who, like most dolphins, is very social and live in group. Highly intelligent, they developed very sophisticated hunting techniques requiring coordination and patience of a huge amount of individuals. Cetaceans in general are the masters of these hunting skills.

This group was also an excellent opportunity for our divemaster trainee Christina to assist diving excursions. She also experience her first deep scenario going down to 40 m and trained on “Rescue” and “Search and Recovery” skills.

To make it brief, we had a good week at Twofish Amed!
