Low season has been kind to us and given us a break from the rainy weather, time for some of our staff to take our instructor Ilse up on her offer to be taken on a new years dive in the pool.
Susi, the resort’s receptionist and Resa, boat crew extraordinaire were the first ones to sign up. Ilse ran the morning program with the help of Tian (dive guide), who was willing to assist. After a briefing about safety, equipment and skills to practice, it was time these two entered the water in full scuba gear for the first time ever.
Initially, a little wobbly on their feet, though once the fins were put on by Tian and the masks were put on their faces, they were off on an unforgettable underwater adventure.
After the dive, they received a lot of questions from other staff members that had witnessed the training, asking them what it was like and whether they enjoyed it.
“Of course” was their answer and Susi suggested that our resort manager Nona might like to try it too. She had done a dive off the resort once before several years ago, and said she would like to try again though this time she would do it together with Gia, who is our admin staff.
Geared up into their equipment by our divemaster in training Dom, the girls entered the pool with a lot of giggles and laughter. Gia ended up completing the whole dive, and she was brilliant….a female dive guide in the making perhaps?
Besides taking the staff on their new years dive in the pool, our instructor team has had their hands full with the arrival of two new divemaster trainees.
Dom and Thibaud will be on Bunaken for the next three weeks, working alongside the dive team in order to to be the next divemasters. Dom’s wife, Catherine has joined him on this journey and is out fun diving together with Manuel from Switzerland and Jonas from Finland.
They are having great visibility, which is due to an upwelling of deep sea water which causes the temperature of the water to drop to 26C! When asked if they had a good morning they agreed that swimming with the giant green turtles that make Bunaken their home its worth every shiver!
