The Giant Frogfish, Antennarius commerson, is an ambush predator so it usually relies on camouflage to avoid detection and they can actually change the hue of their skin to better match their surroundings making them almost impossible to spot. Sometimes though, the Giant Frogfish are hard to miss in Bunaken, growing up to 38cm in length means they are not exactly inconspicuous.
Still, a nice treat for divers as they are not as easy to spot everywhere you go. The Giant Frogfish is found in tropical and subtropical waters from the Indian Ocean to the eastern coasts of the Pacific and Indonesia is one place that people will travel to see these weird and wonderful fish. Lee who just completed his PADI Open Water Course and PADI Advanced Open Water Course with Maia at Two Fish Divers Bunaken was glad to get the opportunity to see something not everyone has seen. Congratulations on completing both certifications here with us!
What with huge frogfish at dive site Bualo, Orca’s spotted traveling through the Bunaken National Marine Park on their migrations, dolphins swimming with the boat and “one-armed” turtles looking clumsy but happy on our reefs, our guests have been loving the close interactions we get with a wide range of marine animals. One rubbish dive they did have was at the jetty, but this is because they were collecting rubbish! Thanks to Divemaster Trainees Wilfried and Nicholas for helping Maia organize the Project Aware Dive Against Debris activity, and thank you, Stephan, MJ, Lee and all the guides that took part, collecting 38kilos of trash and keeping our ocean clean. Great Job!
The ocean is an alluring place for many and sometimes snorkeling just isn’t enough but what better time to try diving than when you are in a top dive destination? Jan and Jeanette decided they wanted to give it a go so they hopped into our custom made dive pool with Colin to try SCUBA diving for the first time. After a short session in the pool learning how to use the equipment and getting comfortable blowing bubbles underwater, they were ready for the real world. A dive on Lekuan 3 seeing turtles, butterfly fish, angel fish, red-tooth trigger fish, blotched porcupine fish and heaps more was a fantastic way to Discover Scuba Diving. Well done guys, hopefully, next time you have more time and you can get your PADI.
Whether you are here to relax like Jan and Jeanette or you have come to spend more time underwater than on lands like Stephan and MJ, we can teach you, guide you or introduce you to our magical underwater world and maybe you will get to see a Giant Frogfish for yourself.
