Some divers arrive here in the Gili Islands with hundreds of dives but have never seen a turtle. Thank you to the Gili Air Shark conservation team here in Gili Air we know loads of facts about the marine life surrounding the Gilis. Their conservation efforts are not only toward the population of sharks here but all marine life. Their mission is “to promote conservation efforts through education and change”. From the efforts of their daily research teams we know so much about the turtles in Gili Air – we know that in the Gilis there are +170 Green Turtles and +49 Hawksbill Turtles. Those might not sound like very big numbers to you but we have one of the largest populations of turtles in the Gili Islands. Come diving with us and see for yourself!
Don’t just dive with turtles – take care of them too!
Although diving with sea turtles in Gili is one of the major draws for people coming to visit the island, according to Gili Shark Conservation team, humans are the greatest threat to the sea turtles. So here are some things we can do together to protect these beautiful creatures:
- Don’t Touch – By touching the turtles you can transmit bacteria from your hand onto their shell or skin which can make them sick
- Keep Two Meters Distance – Did you know turtles need to swim up to the surface to breathe? If you get too close they can become distressed and go into a state of panic causing it to drown. Give them space to breathe.
- Pick it Up – Take rubbish with you every time that you visit the sea. Small actions, when done by many people, can make a big difference.
