Boxfish in Bunaken
The Boxfish, family ostraciidae, is a strange-looking fish but it is a master of buoyancy control. Being square and rigid, you will be surprised how maneuverable they are and jealous of their seemingly effortless ability to glide and turn, in and around the coral reef, with just a flick of their flimsy-looking fins. As divers we should be committed to protecting the underwater world from ourselves to preserve its natural beauty for many generations to come so we think buoyancy like a boxfish is best in Bunaken!
The solor boxfish, ostracion solorensis, in the photo (above) was snapped by Wilfried Kirschenmann when he was doing his Divemaster training here but we are lucky enough to see this, and many other boxfish on the reefs around the Bunaken Marine Park, almost every dive.
Belen from Argentina has been getting some buoyancy tips from the Bunaken boxfish this week after completing her PADI Open Water course and PADI Advanced Open Water course at Two Fish Divers Lembeh with instructor Dan, and then coming here for some amazing fun dives on the wonderwalls of Bunaken. Taking advantage of the combo available at all Two Fish Divers resorts and centers in Indonesia, to experience multiple locations and a variety of diving. Well done achieving your goals and thanks for coming to Two Fish Divers on your round the world tour. Perhaps we have spoilt the rest of your diving adventures with the quality of diving here? You will just have to come back on your way home!
Fiona from the UK has visited Two Fish Divers for about the 10th time this week with a week in Bunaken and a week in Lembeh, getting the chance to see friends again, old and new, and of course enjoying the spectacular diving here in Indonesia. We look forward to seeing you again soon Fiona, the dogs, especially after all the treats! Chris from America is joining you in Lembeh for some more fun diving and practice with the new sidemount rig before heading down to Bali to complete the PADI Instructor training. Good luck Chris, all the best following your dreams.
Maybe one day you will be teaching Rob and Sabine after they did another PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience here in Bunaken with Instructor Maia. After a pool session in our custom made swimming pool, they thoroughly enjoyed exploring the underwater world under the close supervision of a PADI instructor.
With some thunderstorms and rain watering the garden and topping up the island wells this week, we are thankful after nearly 3 months without any, and even when it is raining, the diving is still great. We don’t get much run-off from the island on most of the sites, and the deep water and currents work in our favour for keeping the water clear. A bit less sunlight but warm water none the less means, if we are getting wet anyway, we may as well be diving.
Michael and Jasmine have been making the most of it with a break from school. Being teachers in Jakarta and Singapore respectively, they were enjoying some time out of the classroom with a dose of fun diving and relaxing around the Two Fish Divers resort, glad to not be returning to Europe after their trip as it gets colder there by the day. Unfortunately Monika and Claudia have to return to Germany but they have come to the end of their North Sulawesi diving vacation, also combining Lembeh and Bunaken for the “world’s best muck diving” and the “best wall diving in the world”. We hope to see all of our guests again soon!
If you are planning a trip to North Sulawesi then why not do a combo of muck and walls, or like Karin, Gunther and Joachim, mix things up and explore the walls and then the muck. Either way you won’t be disappointed and our guides can’t wait to show you around their dive sites and amaze you with what we see every day.
