Sara’s Final Week: PADI Divemaster in Gili Air…
I am utterly blown away by how quickly the time of taking my PADI Divemaster in Gili Air has just flown by. It has been such a great experience and one that I will remember forever.
Jenny and Komang are really such great instructors and I am so so grateful that I got to be their student. Really they’re not only wonderful, kindhearted, generous people but they are great teachers. They challenged me and really gave me the time and feedback necessary to grow. Anyone would be lucky to be taught by them.
The rest of the Two Fish Divers crew on the boat and dive guide Jen are always helpful and accommodating. Jen is also especially kind and hilarious and likes to eat ice cream sandwiches that he makes by having ice cream between two slices of bread. Which after trying it… it’s actually not bad.
I am still in love with the beautiful island of Gili Air and its lack of motorized vehicles and I am very sad to leave it and it’s wonderful people and food.
It’s so wild to think about now, but during this brief time of this year I have gone on over 40 dives with Two Fish Divers Gili Air at 25 different sites in Indonesia. I am so happy and grateful that I got to see so many of these beautiful and diverse environments. I feel even more connected to the ocean and so much more dedicated to helping protect and restore it.

Sarah diving in Gili Air’s tropical warm waters
Only 1% of the world population explores our blue planet scuba diving. To be apart of this percent I believe is both a privilege and a responsibility. I have been lucky enough to get to see reefs that are still prospering despite all the pollution, ocean acidification, temperature changes, and overfishing. I have also seen graveyards under the sea of bleached dead coral with no life in sight.
As Karen Blixen said, “The cure for anything is saltwater – tears, sweat, or the sea.” I think a combination of these will also help to restore the ocean. Facing degraded parts of the ocean might bring you to tears, but it is necessary to know both the good and the bad. Having lots of time and research spend on learning about the ocean along with some hard work and sweat, all this I think will help us protect and restore the lungs and heart of our planet… the ocean.
