Is Lembeh a good destination for dive training? What is the PADI Advanced Open Water course all about? So, you’ve completed your open water training and you’re now a certified diver – congratulations! The next step is the PADI Advanced Open Water course. This course is intended to improve your new-found dive skills and apply them in different underwater situations. It consists of 5 open water training dives and you choose what interests you from a selection of potential dives. This means that, depending on your interests and location, you could find yourself exploring an underwater wreck, searching for nocturnal marine life after sunset or learning how to capture amazing marine life with an underwater camera!
Shoutout to Kachan this week who crushed his Advanced Open Water course with instructor Dan in Lembeh – what an awesome way to spend a birthday! We started with a peak performance buoyancy dive from shore on our House Reef to develop proper neutral buoyancy, trim position and finning skills (frog kicking and no hands now!) which we continued to practice on our subsequent dives. In the afternoon we headed out on the boat for navigation and wrapped up some theory in the evening. The navigation and deep dives are the only compulsory dives in the course (you select the others!) and the next morning we went to 30 metres for the first time. We need a good reason to conduct a deep dive and we had not one but two good reasons (apart from the training of course…) because waiting for us at our maximum depth were a paddle-flap and weedy rhinopias; two extremely rare species of scorpionfish.

This awesome start to the day was finished off with our underwater naturalist and night dives, which completed the Advanced Open Water Course. The more you know about the underwater world the more enjoyment you will get out of diving and the underwater naturalist dive is Dan’s favourite to teach – especially in the fascinating environment of Lembeh Strait! Although they can be daunting, night dives are a great way to finish off the course and ours did not disappoint with plenty of frogfish and cephalopods out hunting.
Each dive which you make as part of your Advanced Open Water Course can be credited towards a PADI specialty diver course and combining one of these extra courses with your Advanced Course is a great way to get extra experience and another certification.
