This week in Lembongan…We have been founding aliens in the water. As the currents move and the waves roll, these salps find each other. Using jet propulsion these planktonic link together to form growing and growing communities.
Instructor Laurent had an alien encounter this week. While diving in the shallows at Buyuk, something caught Laurent’s eye. He approached slowly, curious as to what he had found. The creature was around 30cm long, floating in mid water with fish pecking at it. When Laurent got closer, pointer at the ready, (for scientific purposes) he noticed that the alien had a form that looked similar to a baby whale shark, with a wide mouth, yet it was completely see through. As the reef fish bit chucks out of the ‘thing’ Laurent could tell that it has quite hard. After returning to the dive shop and asking around, we came to the conclusion that this alien was a form of a salp community.
Besides these alien encounters that we have experienced, we have also still been seeing the Molas and the Mantas. Frog Fish, Big Schools of Tuna, Giant Trevally, Scorpion Leaf Fish, Bamboo Shark and Candy Crabs.![]()
