This week in Sanur we’ve been seeing a lot of variety – Big fish and little fish with Two Fish Bali, there’s been lots of the macro life we love to find but bigger fish too, such as Manta Rays and our friends the Whitetip Reef Sharks.
The Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) is one of the sharks we most commonly see here in Bali, along with the Blacktip Reef. Unlike the latter shark however, which needs to constantly swim in order to breathe (ram ventilation), the Whitetip can rest on the bottom during the day and breathe by pumping water through its gills (buccal pumping). Often mistaken for sleeping behaviour the shark is still awake, just having a rest before a busy night hunting fish, crustaceans and octopus in their patch of the reef.
Maruti was our guest on that dive in Padang Bai, and after we collected him from the airport he was diving with the sharks less than 3 hours after landing in Bali. Welcome Maruti!! While him and his guide Rein were playing with the sharks and turtle at the bigger end of the scale, they also saw some quality macro life including Ornate Ghost Pipefish and Frogfish. Meanwhile we also had divers on a daytrip to Nusa Lembongan who came back to the centre with big smiles and tales of Manta.
Just another day diving in Bali – big or small, we’ve got it all !!
