After 2,5 weeks in Nusa Lembongan, we left the island to go on a new adventure. We must admit, the departure was not an easy one, as we really enjoyed our time there, but still, the change of scenery was a nice opportunity to see a different side of Indonesia.

In fact, Lombok is so different compared to Nusa Lembongan that it is hard to compare both locations. South Lombok is drier than anything you’ve seen in Bali or Lembongan, the landscape is mostly untouched, with little villages popping up along the steep never-ending coastal road. It’s fair to say that you are in a much more remote area of the world than you could ever be in Bali.

The South Lombok Two Fish Dive Center, as well as “the villas” (one of the lovely accommodations in the area) and their little café, are all part of a small farm, with cows and chickens running around, and majestic cashew trees all over the place.

If you aim for some peace and quiet after a few busy weeks, THIS is the place you’re looking for!

Considering our progression in the Divemaster Internship in South Lombok, we started the week with some dry skills which covered workshops about the technical aspect of compressors and regulators, a talk about Project aware and an introduction to the PADI Pro website.

We further did some mapping exercises, which we thought would be tough as we were not familiar with the dive sites in South Lombok. Still, after a few dives, everything was manageable. So we ended up with a map which shows not only one but two dive sites and which can be used to brief snorkelers and divers alike!

If you ́ were still wondering whether taking your Divemaster Internship in South Lombok is the right place for you; expect healthy coral reefs, lots of macro-life and this special feeling, knowing that on most days, you ́re not just the only boat on the dive site, but in the whole area.

Apart from the joy of daily diving, however, the remoteness comes with its own challenges. As the area cannot establish a sustainable waste management system, a lot of (plastic) waste keeps ending up in the mangroves, the beach and the ocean.  This puts dive shops, like Two Fish, but also local based NGO’s, like SORCE into a necessity to use their own resources and to adapt solutions which may help to mitigate the environmental concerns related to improper waste disposal.

In the same vein, we participated in a beach clean up organised by SORCE, held a beach clean-up in front of the dive centre and tried to spread the word for regular clean-ups. Besides that, Dom, our instructor, is eager to enhance the recycling capacities of the resort by organising a pick-up service for recyclables so that they end up in a facility which is able to recycle them. While these are baby steps and may not solve the issue of waste pollution, it is a start and a true sign of being aware of the situation which may translate into bigger (and desperately needed) actions. We are learning a lot on our Divemaster Internship in South Lombok about the environment too!

The final week of our Divemaster Internship in South Lombok was filled with fun (and hell) dives and we ́re freaking proud of finally being able to call ourselves PADI Divemasters! This would not have been possible without the dedication of our instructors, Valerii, Baron, Tom and Dom and the whole Two Fish team; therefore, we would like to thank each and every one of you for making these past five weeks so special. We would also like to give an extra shout out to Dom for his guidance and encouragement without we would not have mastered the snorkel test!
