This week we did some more practicing in guiding and assisting diving courses but this week’s highlight was definitely the reef clean up, the underwater equipment exchange and the mapping project for the dive master.
Monday we did a reef clean up as past of the Dive Master “project aware” workshop! We took 2 smaller bags plus a big equipment bag with us and went looking for trash at the Gili Air housereef. Because it wasn’t the first dive at the housereef, I knew there is going to be a lot of trash. But it was insane! In 70 minutes we covered maybe 100 square meters and weren’t even close to picking up everything! This made me realize once again that we should stop using so much plastic immediately!
We found empty ricebags which covered whole corals, bottles, fishernets, chipsbags and so on. I hope that the people soon get educated or realize that we need to stop using plastic and make so much trash and learn how to recycle properly!
It was a super fun dive but also very sad and i hope that we have more dives like this so the corals and fish don’t die!
Later n the week I got to do a “funny” exercise with my buddy Andy. It was the so called “Stress test” where we had to exchange the full equipment under water except the wetsuit and weights. And on top of that we were only allowed to use one regulator and always take 2 breaths each while exchanging the equipment!
It was so fun but really tested your stress capability, which you need for handling difficult situations as a dive master!
