Dugongs graze regularly on the sea grass beds next to Bunaken and will definitely give you a surprise if you spot them! The best time to see Dugongs in Bunaken is at high tide around full or new moon in the late afternoon. We don’t see them too often, so if you do see one, count yourself very lucky!
Harry, who just completed his PADI Advanced Open Water Course decided to do an extra dive with his instructor Maia so he could get some tips about his camera and taking photos underwater. At the very end of their dive close to their safety stop, they spotted Mum and baby Dugongs in Bunaken!! The pair familial were swimming slowly away from the reef. Maia and Harry approached slowly and Harry managed to capture a photo of the pair. It was a good thing they got a photo otherwise I don’t think anyone would have believed them!
Aside from Dugongs in Bunaken, we had a few more crazy days at Two Fish Bunaken this week where we couldn’t quite believe all the bigger stuff we were seeing! Everyone on the boat was seeing huge napoleon wrasse coming in close, large dogtooth tuna and giant trevally swimming past, schools of bumphead parrotfish, eagle rays and reef sharks staying around so we could get a good look at them. Marin and Anna didn’t get enough of Bunaken diving so came back for a few more days of diving and were excited by all the big stuff this week!
The thing about Bunaken dive sites is that they are next to some deep water so you never know what might swim past. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on the blue just in case you see something unexpected! We still never get enough of all the turtles! Lily, one of our guests for the last few days, had a special moment with the turtles when she had 4 circling and dancing around her at the end of the dive!
Congratulations go to Harry for completing his PADI Advanced with Maia and PADI Enriched Air Specialty with Colin. David also joined the Enriched Air Course as well as doing the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Course with Colin which is a great course to improve your air consumption, buoyancy control and comfort underwater. Martin, who has done many dives with us the past few weeks is now off to Two Fish in Lembeh to visit the weird and wonderful creatures before heading home. Hopefully see you next year!
