This week in Amed some of our guests spotted a Ghost Pipefish during a Night Dive on the House Reef right in front of the Dive Center. These little guys give us a hard time to find as they have an amazing ability to camouflage, to blend in with the seagrass, weeds, and in this particular case with the Feather stars.
Ghost Pipefish are close relatives to Seahorses and Seadragons, and therefore possess a similar large snout, bony rings around their body for protection and a fan-shaped tail.
Just like the Seahorses, Pipefish are ovoviviparous (Eggs develop and hatch within the mother and the young are born live….just so you don’t need to google the word) and it is the male who raises the kids!
Credits for the picture all go to Tommy Sri, one of our students who stayed for two weeks at Two Fish Divers Amed to get his EFR/Rescue Diver certification, and whole set of PADI specialties: Wreck, Deep, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Naturalist, and Digital Underwater Photography. He therefore achieved to become a Master Scuba Diver; simply the highest PADI recreational certification.
