January blues? Not in Bunaken!Statistically speaking, this week is when most people around the globe are hit by the so-called January blues – but not our team in Bunaken.

Granted, this is one of the quieter times of the year, but with guests completing three dives a day, our dive guides are still busy looking for creatures large and small. What’s even better is that with fewer divers around we have a good chance to have our chosen dive sites all to ourselves – plenty of time to hang out with Napoleon wrasse, watch our favourite sea turtles munch away in the morning and search for smaller critters.

A visit to dive site Pangalingan on neighbouring island Manado Tua (the one with the extinct volcano, for those of you who’ve been here) gave us a great opportunity to watch large schools of barracuda, tuna and snapper whilst drifting in some faster currents. Around Bunaken itself we’ve seen smaller schools of tuna and black snapper recently, so it’s been a great time to simply hang in front of the walls and look out into the blue.

If you’re coming to visit us later this year, you might see a few new faces around the dive centre as well: Dion is just starting to train two new dive guides. What’s required? Excellent dive skills, a high regard for safety – and eagle eyes, of course! We’ll keep you posted on their progress.
