The Orangutan Crab is definitely a furry favourite here on Lembeh and our guest, Anais, captured a beautiful photo of this one.
The Orangutan Crab, also known as the Spider Crab, the Hairy Crab, the Bubble Coral Crab or the Decorator Crab comes from the family, Inachidae. These guys are only tiny, their body is only approximately 2 centimeters, but they have extra long arms to make up for this. They are covered in tiny hairs which serve as their camouflage against predators. These tiny hairs also capture plankton and other tiny organisms for the Orangutan Crab to feed on. You can find these guys anywhere from 2 to 20 meters in depth and they are quite often found on Bubble Coral, although not always.
Also seen this week were several sightings of the Mimic Octopus, Wunderpus, Blue Ringed Octopus, Flamboyant Cuttlefish, Pygmy Seahorse and lots and lots of Nudibranchs and of course, Crabs and Shrimps! Special spot this week goes to the Harlequin Shrimp, found at Magic Rock, by our guides, John and Rayan.
It is the wet season here in Lembeh, but not a lot of rain so far. The visibility remains the same and the critters just keep on impressing. Our guests this week came from Spain, Germany, China, France and Denmark.
