Last week we went to Nusa Penida a whole lot of times. At the moment, Bali is crazy about all the Mola sightings and daily pictures and videos of Mola sightings went viral of these beautiful, large and funny fish. But, we didn’t only see Molas and Mantas in Nusa Penida. Nusa Penida has many other amazing surprises. Last week we saw four Napoleon Wrasses (Humphead Wrasse) and a turtle swimming together in Toya Pakeh!
The Napoleon Wrasse is the biggest in the Wrasse family and get up to 180 kg and up to 2 m long! Females are generally smaller and grow up to 1 meter. Napoleon Wrasse has a large hump on their forehead, thick lips and vary in colour from blue to green and purple. They eat whatever they can find, even sea urchins and crown of thorns! They crack open the sea urchins by striking them against a rock.
One of the things that impresses most of our guests is that the Napoleon Wrasse is able to change sex. They are born with both male and female sex organs. What causes the change is still largely unknown but we know that they often change from female to male when the dominant male dies, to ensure the survival of the species.
Last week was also Project AWARE week! Two Fish Divers Sanur joined the weekly beach clean up with Trash Hero Sanur. Project Aware week is only one week a year, but at Two Fish Divers we consider every day an important day to clean up our oceans, to educate and to inspire!
