Nudibranch in Amed

One very cool thing about diving from Two Fish Divers Amed is the diversity of nudibranchs you can find on the different dive sites available. Well, it would be lying to say it only happens in Amed but as far as I know, we are very well ranked when it comes to these guys.

Nudibranch is a big field in itself. It literally means in Latin “naked lung”. The crown of gills they carry on their back is what differentiate them from regular Sea Slugs. If we distinguish four superfamilies, the number of different individuals across these groups reaches over two thousand individuals with several families inside each group, and there are still some new ones being discovered on a regular basis. Nudibranch is a gastropod. That means it is a cousin of snails and slugs and we could bet they were part of those adventuring themselves out of the water to spread on land when life started to exit the water. But let’s make it clear, that’s just a bet ! The larger superfamilies are known as Dorid Nudibranchs followed by Aeolid Nudibranchs. Dendronotid Nudibranchs and Arminid Nudibranch are smaller superfamilies but still count a lot of different individuals in their rank.

All this diversity in Amed gives our curiosity a range close to infinity and our chance to catch them all in a picture almost impossible. To make it even more fun and the chase even harder, Nudibranchs, of course, live roughly everywhere along the coastline of our planet. From black and white to bright colored, from bubbly to slick or hairy they are legion and it’s always a pleasure to discover one you never saw before.
