Safety stops are often thought of as a boring but necessary part of our dives. But do they really have to be boring? Not at all! At our nice sloping reefs and muck sites here in Amed, safety stops are as fun as the rest of the dive – as witnessed by our PADI Open Water Course student Malene. During one of our recent safety stops at the Batuh Belah dive site, we suddenly saw a huge shimmering array of ballet dancers. Going closer, we found the dancers to be a huge school of Bigfin reef squid comprised of adults and juveniles. Glittering in the rays of the sun, the squid danced around us making our safety stop go by in a blink of an eye.

The bigfin reef squid, endemic to the Indo-Pacific,is often mistaken for a cuttlefish due to its large oval fin around its body. It can change color from a translucent white to yellow to violet at will from the moment it hatches which makes for a wonderful display.

Seeing them at night is even more spectacular, as witnessed by Eze on a night dive at our house reef here in front of the Two Fish Amed Resort. Not only can Reef squid change color, but they are also covered in iridescent cells, reflecting light shining on them in sparkly red and green.
