A tiny little Slug, affectionately known as Shaun The Sheep keeps our algae under control here in Lembeh. Extremely small and quite difficult to spot with the naked eye, but as you can see in this awesome image taken by our guests, Victor and Lynn. They make a beautiful macro shot!

Also known as the Kuro Sapsucking Slug and the “Leaf Sheep”, Shaun the Sheep comes from the family Costasiellidae, under the genus, Costasiella kuroshimae. They only grow up to 7mm’s in length and are found on sandy bottoms feeding on algae. Shaun the Sheep is the only organism in the world that can perform photosynthesis through a process called Kleptoplasty. The slug absorbs the chloroplasts from the algae into its body to carry out photosynthesis and provides food for itself. Extremely clever little critter!

Our guides here in Lembeh are extremely good at finding these tiny guys, along with so many other minute creatures, so be sure to let them know what you want to see and they will do their very best to find it for you!

Also seen this week in Lembeh were the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, Blunt Decorator Crab, Lembeh Sea Dragon, Ornate Ghost Pipefish and Clown Frogfish. The superstar of the week was the Weedy Rhinopias!!

Our guests this week mostly returned guests, thanks to Ian & Matt, Gina, Yvette, Jo, Chris, Kim, Yvan, Cedric, Caroline, Guillermo, Simon and Nicole for coming back to see us again!! We had guests from Switzerland, the UK, USA, Spain and Singapore.
