This week in Amed we had a very close encounter with a turtle that posed for us. The photographer behind the camera is Derek Cheah, from the very close-by Singapore, who came diving with his Family for several days.
This beauty is a Hawksbill turtle (“Eretmochelys Imbricata” if you want to go crazy), named after its narrow, pointed beak. They like to feed on sponges, sea anemones and jellyfish. This last bit is probably the most problematic for them. They tend to confuse plastic bags with jellyfish, which can be deadly. The coral reefs need them, and we all want to see them around for as long as possible; so do the right thing; dispose of your garbage responsibly and if possible don’t use plastic bags.
