This week in Lembongan… Dive guide Rein was able to this amazing creature hiding in the rubble at 27 meters in Crystal Bay. This strangle and colourful scorpionfish is on the top of many macro diver‘s things to spot under the water and to have the chance to see one of this colour is very lucky! This type of scorpionfish is normally find in rocky, algaerich waters and are covered in weed-like appendages, this is where they get their name from. Their colouring can range vastly, from dark red and purple to yellow and lavender. This one that Rein spotted was very purple, it was a treat for Gen (Rein’s guest) to see. Like most Scorpaenidae, weedy scorpionfish are mostly nocturnal ambush hunters, using their camouflage to prey on unsuspecting fish and invertebrates. They rarely swim, but rather move along the bottom propelling themselves with their fins.
Our dive guides are very well trained at find the crazy small creatures as well as the wonderfully weird creatures. These skills come from their time training in Lembeh, which is one of the muck diving captals of the world. This is where they take the time to hone in their spotting eye and get use to spotting the difference of a floating leaf to a ghost pipe fish, to a weedy scorpionfish from a bit of coarl. If you are after spotting these weird and wonderful creatures, many of our diving locations provide the chance to spot them.
